Certification in Video Intervention Therapy
Basic Certification
For the basic level the requirements are as follows.
Training seminar attendance
A minimum of 8 seminar days are required. Any combination of seminars can be used. The seminars can be taught by George Downing or another designated VIT teacher.
Cases
A minimum of 2 cases using VIT, intervening with each case at least 3 times with video, is required.
Supervision
A minimum 4 sessions of supervision is required. Each of the 2 cases fulfilling the previous requirement must be supervised at least one time. The other 2 supervision sessions you are welcome to use either for one or both of these same cases, or for other cases where you are intervening with video.
Supervision should be done with a designated VIT supervisor. There are three general ways to accomplish this. You are welcome to use any combination of these ways to meet the supervision requirement.
- Direct individual supervision. You do individual supervision sessions with the supervisor.
- Direct group supervision. This is possible when a VIT supervisor offers supervision in a group setting. Each time you personally are supervised in the group counts for one of the sessions needed for the requirement.
- Long-distance supervision. This can be done over the internet. It is a little bit complex, but it works very well.
Your supervisor will help you with following details. The two of you will plan a time when you can discuss your case by telephone (e.g., using Skype). Prior to the supervision itself, you will send a copy of one or more relevant videos. These might be one or more interaction videos (a video of the patient interacting with someone else, a video with which you have already worked or are planning to work), and/or one or more session videos (a video of yourself intervening with an interaction video).
You and the supervisor will also arrange how, during the supervision phone call, you will be able both to watch the same video. There are good platforms available for this, as your supervisor will inform you.

Advanced Certification
For the advanced level the requirements are as follows.
Training seminar attendance
An additional 12 seminar days (i.e., in addition to the original 8 required for basic certification) is required. Any combination of seminars can be used. The seminars can be taught by George Downing or any another designated VIT teacher.
Cases
An additional 3 cases are required, intervening with each case at least 3 times with video.
Supervision
An additional 4 sessions of supervision are required. Each case mentioned in the previous requirement must be supervised at least one time. The remaining supervision sessions can be for these cases also, or for other cases.
Supervision should be done with a designated VIT supervisor, using any combination of the same three general available ways as described for the basic certificate.
Costs
The costs for obtaining the basic certificate are as follows.
- The costs of the seminars themselves.
- The costs of the supervision sessions. Exactly what this will be is determined by the individual supervisor. A supervisor will charge a fee per hour typical for her or his geographic location and professional context. With regard to long-distance supervision, normally the supervisor will charge for both the telephone time (typically 1 hour) as well as the preparation time she or he has needed to look at your video or videos beforehand (typically between ½ and 1 hour).
- An administrative fee of 150 U.S. dollars or 120 euros, to be paid to the VIT institute once the requirements are completed and you are ready to receive your certificate.
For the advanced certificate, the costs are just those of the seminars and the supervision sessions themselves, plus an administrative fee at the end of 150 U.S. dollars or 120 euros.
Who is eligible to apply for certification
Persons applying for certification are expected either already to have professional experience doing psychotherapy, counseling, or mental health coaching, or else to be presently engaged in an educational or training track leading to such professional activity.
